Negotiations for a new contract with Safeway got underway in January, with UFCW 1518 President Ivan Limpright presenting Union members’ proposals to company management. Ivan is accompanied by the Union Negotiating Committee in these negotiations, which is composed of members from stores across the province.

Below are the members of your Union Negotiating Committee for Safeway:

	Bruce Armstrong Bruce has worked as a Clerk II for Safeway since May 1999 and continues to serve as a Shop Steward. Before starting with Safeway, Bruce attended the University of British Columbia where he participated in establishing several policies to protect student rights.
	Susan Bayly Susan has been a Cashier at Safeway since 1990 and is a long-service Shop Steward. She has lived her whole life in Victoria and continues to be actively involved in her community. Susan is currently a Member at Large on the Victoria Labour Council and a member of the Board of Directors of Victoria United Way as a representative of labour.
	Harminder Bhupal Harminder has worked for Safeway as a Pharmacy Technician for 20 years. Harminder attended the June 2007 Bargaining Conference, where he spoke on behalf of Pharmacy Technicians and all Major Retail Foods members when he said it’s time everyone makes a living wage.
	Lucas Brunner Lucas has worked for Safeway since December 1999. He has been actively involved in the union for several years. Lucas has participated in union organizing efforts and was elected to the Union Executive Board in 2007. Lucas has also served as a Temporary Union Representative.
	Wally Chan Wally began working for Safeway in 1998 and became a Shop Steward in 1999. Wally has attended the Major Retail Foods Bargaining Conference in 2002 and 2007. He is active in his community and participates in Labour’s United Way fundraising efforts. Wally is an elected member of the Union Executive Board and has served on the Union Negotiating Committee since 2003.
	Karen Palmer Karen has been a union member employed with Safeway since 1969, has worked in the Bakery and as a Cashier, and continues to do various off-till duties. Karen has been a member of the Executive Board since 1989 and is a long-service Shop Steward. Karen brings significant experience to the negotiating table, as this will be her sixth consecutive term serving on the Union Negotiating Committee.
	Larry Ransom Larry has worked for Safeway since 1972 and has been a Shop Steward in his store since 1988. He has been a member of the Union’s Executive Board since 2001. Larry is active in his community, and is currently serving as an elected School Trustee and School Board Chair in School District #70 Alberni. Larry has served on the Union Negotiating Committee since 2003.
	Stephanie Severyn Stephanie Severyn is a Clerk II who has worked at Safeway for 3 years. She was hired as a Cashier and within the last year was successful in transferring into Starbucks, where she now works as the Operator at the Starbucks kiosk in her store. This is Stephanie’s first time serving on the Union Negotiating Committee.
