The Union Bargaining Committee met with the company in Kitimat in late January to begin bargaining for a new contract.
SuperValu members have been without a contract since 2005. The members are fighting for a contract that provides better wages, a one-grid system for all members and an agreement that has no concessions.
Members want some serious changes to the existing contract, including wage increases, getting rid of the two-tier system, better benefits, and more opportunity for a better quality of life.
Junior Clerks in the store are forced to work two jobs just to survive. A Junior Clerk echoing the sentiment of the other Junior Clerks said, “I can’t afford to live. We all work so hard, and there’s just no future opportunity here, and we’re tired of it. Enough is enough. We want a contract that works for everyone.”
“Right out of the gate we have seen the company is not going to play nice in this round of negotiations for a fair contract,” says Frank Pozzobon, Secretary-Treasurer of UFCW 1518. “These members deserve respect, and a contract that provides them with a good quality of life, and the union is in full support of these goals.”
