A warm welcome to the newest members of UFCW 1518 – the drivers from Victoria’s Islands West Warehouse. Islands West specializes in serving grocery stores, restaurants, hotels, hospitals, schools and Government facilities with fresh fruit and vegetables. The union will be in touch with members in the near future to discuss plans for negotiating a new contract.
Bringing new members into a union is the lifeblood of any union. The more union members there are, the better unions are able to protect and build upon the superior wages, benefits, and working conditions that come with union membership.
UFCW 1518 has an active program to bring the benefits of the “Union advantage” to workers interested in joining the union. It’s not easy, however. Employers spend huge amounts of time, energy, and money interfering with workers’ freedom to choose a union. Despite this, workers continue to stand up and be counted, and they sign up to join UFCW 1518.
Ivan Limpright, President of UFCW 1518, comments that, “the challenge of union organizing is simply the challenge of helping working men and women come together to improve their lives.”
“We live in a time when big corporations have been having too much success at seizing control of our workplaces and our governments, and driving down the quality of life that workers have,” says Limpright. “By joining unions, workers help level the playing field and gain a real opportunity to improve their lives. That’s a fact proven throughout history.”

The union is pleased to welcome Shoppers Drug Mart members in the Terrace location.
After a strong organizing effort, the employees in the store became very interested in union representation and signed union cards, making them one of the newest additions to the UFCW 1518 membership.
“We are very happy to see our newest members from Terrace become a part of the union,” says UFCW 1518 President Ivan Limpright. “We look forward to working with these members, now and in the future. The union is focused on negotiating a good, fair contract for these members that provides them with the rights and protections they deserve, including wage increases, good benefits and a safe working environment.”
Shoppers Wholesale Foods members in Prince George have been successful in ratifying their first collective agreement.
Negotiations between the Union Bargaining Committee and the employer resulted in a new 2 1/2 year agreement that provides wage increases, job protection and better benefits for the members.
“It was the hard work of the Union Bargaining Committee and the dedication of these members that got them their contract,” said UFCW 1518 President Ivan Limpright. “We look forward to working for, and with, these members now and in the future.”
