A number of Local 1518 members employed at Save-On Foods in Ladner and Richmond stores became ill, and one required medical treatment after breathing in fumes from toxic chemicals used in the stores to strip floor wax.
A Worksafe BC investigation done in March concluded that Save-On management hadn’t properly warned the employees about the dangers of breathing in the toxic chemical fumes that comes from the floor stripper being used in the store.
The investigation noted, “workers were not informed of the identity of the chemical agent, its possible effects on worker health and the precautions required to protect the health and safety of the workers.”
Hopefully in the future Save-On management will take more care and interest in its employees health and safety when using products containing toxic chemicals. Any union members with concerns about unsafe working conditions are urged to contact their Union Representative and/or Shop Steward and worker reps on their Health & Safety committees. Any member experiencing symptoms of exposure to these chemicals, including upper respiratory irritation, or headaches must leave the affected area and get fresh air.
Everyone deserves to go home safely and in good health, and there are laws to make sure employers get this message too!
