Safeway Member Wins $1000s in Back Pay

January 22, 2010

A UFCW 1518 member employed as a management trainee at Safeway recently received thousands of dollars in back pay after the union was informed the member had never been paid ATO, his proper leaves, or his entitled wage for months.

The member works at Safeway #179 in Ladner and was being paid approximately $12 per hour when he was supposed to be paid approximately $18 per hour. He was also not receiving credit for ATO days, nor proper leaves to which he was entitled.

Once this information came to the union’s attention, the member’s Union Representative spoke to the company on behalf of the member, and was able to get the employer to pay the member back in cash for what he was rightly entitled to all along.

“This is exactly the kind of issue where having a union to represent you makes the difference,” said Ivan Limpright, President of UFCW 1518. “It is interesting to see that this is another example of Safeway not treating even their own management staff properly.”

Recently, 200 store managers working for the Aldi chain in the United States filed a class-action lawsuit, claiming their employer wrongly failed to pay them overtime for working more than 40 hours per week. (Click here for more on this story.)
