UFCW 1518 Health & Safety Meetings Begin
February 08, 2010
The union began the first of many Health & Safety seminars and roundtable meetings on February 3 at UFCW 1518’s head office in New Westminster.
Worker Representatives and Co-chairs from 11 units in the Lower Mainland discussed in detail the new H&S Committee guidebook developed by the union at this session.
Common hazardous situations were discussed and analyzed. Committee members also discussed how they could ensure our members’ rights to work in safe and healthy workplaces are respected and implemented.
In addition, participants tried out some of the new audit forms developed to assess strengths and weaknesses of worksite committees and the employers’ compliance with important H&S regulations.
Lastly, Committee Representatives and Worker Co-chairs were encouraged to see themselves as advocates for the union’s members and H&S Shop Stewards.
We look forward to following up these sessions with on site discussions and meetings. Each month the union will hold similar sessions with Worker Representatives and Co-chairs throughout the province. The union will arrange for members to receive time off and cover wages during these sessions.
Once additional dates have been confirmed for the union’s H&S meetings, this information will be posted on the union’s website.
