Safeway Member Voted One of Twelve Olympic Torch Bearers

UFCW 1518 member Tim Palmer, who works at Safeway #80 in Victoria as a General Clerk, has been selected from his district to run with the Olympic torch.

Tim is one of 12 fortunate Safeway members chosen to run with the torch.

“A contest was held in the Safeway stores where Coca Cola was the sponsor,” said Tim. “We had to write a story on one of three categories, mine was about how I help out in the community.”

After the vote within the store the results went to Safeway’s head office in Calgary where Tim was selected.

“I was the only one chosen from our district,” he said. “I believe I was chosen because everyone knows how hard I work and I’m always happy to help customers with whatever they need.”

Tim not only enjoys watching the Olympics on TV but is quite the sportsman himself.

Tim is a Special Olympian swimmer who trains once a week. He also tried curling and used to play floor hockey in the Winter Special Olympics too. First you have to qualify before moving on to bigger competitions, he explained.

“I’m proud of being selected to carry the torch and think this is a good opportunity,” said eight-year member Tim.

Tim is excited his family is coming to watch him run with the torch.
