Union 'Education Week' to run June 15-18! (May 7 Registration deadline)

May 04, 2010

Due to the high level of member interest in the new union education program, Ivan Limpright, President of UFCW 1518, has announced that an 'Education Week' will be held from Tuesday, June 15 through Friday, June 18 at the union's New Westminster offices.

"With the number of registrations we've received already, we felt it would work well for the members to kick things off with an 'Education Week' in June," said Limpright. "There is a pent-up demand for union education among members, and I am committed to making this happen. If a member's schedule means they can't make the June session, we are already planning another session for this Fall. The goal is to make sure this union's  members get the kind of good, solid union education they want, and they deserve."

"We will create the opportunity for Local 1518 members across the province to have access to our courses, and no matter where you live in B.C., you should feel free to sign up for the courses that interest you," he said. "Because there is a particularly strong demand for the two-day Advanced Shop Steward course, we will be focusing on this course during our first Education Week in June."

Members from across the province are encouraged to sign up for the courses that interest them, and existing Shop Stewards who have completed the Basic Shop Steward course are particularly encouraged to register for the Shop Steward Advanced I course.

Information on UFCW 1518 Education Week: June 15-18, 2010

The Shop Steward Advanced I course is a 2-day course, and the Education Week in June will be broken into two 2-day sections: June 15-16, and June 17-18. Other courses may be offered at this time pending the number of registrations received.

Union members who are able to attend the June Education Week will be booked off work by the union for a two-day period, with travel time also taken into consideration for those attending from outside the Lower Mainland.

Deadline for course registration for the June 15-18 Education Week will be May 7.

Those members who have already submitted registration forms will be contacted by the union, and asked to confirm their availability for the June 15-18 period.

Going forward, all members who submit course registration forms will be asked on the registration form to indicate and confirm their availability for the June 15-18 Education Week.

Those members who are able to attend the June 15-18 Education Week will be registered on a first-come first-serve basis.

Those members who are unable to attend in June but who have registered will be given priority to attend the fall 2010 Education Week (exact dates to be determined).

All courses are a maximum two days in length, and will be held at the UFCW 1518 offices located at 350 Columbia St., New Westminster.

The union will make arrangements with the member's employer to book the member off work and ensure their wages are covered for the time period of the courses. The union will also reimburse members required to travel from outside the Lower Mainland.
