Health Care Members Win Mileage Grievance

May 01, 2010

Thanks to a recently won grievance, mileage will be paid to a number of UFCW 1518 Health Care sector members in the Interior and Okanagan.

The union won the group grievance on behalf of the members over the employer's refusal to pay members their mileage claims if submitted after the deadline.

The Interior Health Authority (IHA) has a policy that states, “mileage submissions must be made prior to 30 days following the end of the previous month.” As a result, some employers were then rejecting claims that came in ‘late’ and were refusing to pay members for their mileage.

After the union became involved, the IHA acknowledged that it was not the employer’s intent to apply policies that breached the Collective Agreement, and that affected union members would indeed be paid to resolve this grievance.
