Member Terminated For Union Organizing Gets Job Back

July 22, 2010

When you dedicate yourself to your organization, work hard, and meet your company’s expectations, what would you expect from your employer? At the very least, the obvious answers would be acknowledgment, appreciation, maybe even a raise. Unfortunately for many people this is not the case. And in search for a better workplace, people join unions.

Recently a UFCW 1518 member was terminated while their workplace was in the process of forming a union. After 8 years of solid standing, an impeccable performance record, and no discipline, this members’ job was taken away from them.

The Employer approached this member with a list of artificial offenses they said were committed, and were the reasons for this members termination. But both the member and their co-workers knew that these accusations were false.

Because this member was a part of UFCW 1518, and these premeditated accusations were made during the organizing campaign, this employee had the right to keep their job.

“Once we heard that this member was terminated and that their termination did not meet the test for proper cause, we stepped in and filed a Labour Relations Board unfair labour practice complaint on their behalf,” says Local 1518 President Ivan Limpright. “UFCW 1518 addressed the situation and offered the proper support that ultimately got this member their job back,” says Limpright.

This member had the support of their union – support that recognized their member was treated unfairly. It is for this reason that this member will be returning to a job that is rightfully theirs.

It is illegal for any worker to be terminated for organizing their workplace.
