Vancouver Island Health Authority Applies Accommodations For Workers

August 11, 2010

It took almost a year for Vancouver Island Health Authority to agree, but the outcome was certainly worth waiting for. Recently, Port Alberni Home Support has officially applied a modified duties accommodation for a UFCW 1518 member employed by the agency as a Community Health Worker.

Up until this point, workers were given modified days, and modified hours, but not official modified duties, which have become common in most workplaces.

“We’re very happy for the member at the Port Alberni agency who will benefit from this,” says Ivan Limpright, President of UFCW Local1518. “If workers have the proper medical documentation that says they can only perform certain duties, then they deserve to have their duties accommodated wherever possible.”

“The right of an injured worker to have their workplace duties accommodated to their injury is an important aspect of the health & safety rights we have fought to establish, and this is a positive step for everyone concerned,” he said.
