Union recovers 1½ years of MSP Benefits for member
August 12, 2010
It is important for all members to check their taxable benefits and ensure the correct deductions are being made.
Recently the union filed a grievance on behalf of a member whose Medical Service Plan deductions were not set up correctly. Despite the member’s repeated attempts of sending in the proper paperwork to receive the deductions, and even though other benefits were being properly made, her MSP was still not being deducted. The result was the government ended up sending the member a whopping bill demanding payment of her MSP premiums.
The union’s grievance was successful and the company was authorized to pay back MSP premiums on behalf of this member from the beginning of 2009.
If you want to avoid any confusion about your MSP (or any other) deductions being made, make sure you have proof that you have submitted the proper paperwork. Before you fax or mail your information, photocopy your paperwork, then have your manager date and sign them, and approve that they are being sent to the appropriate benefits department for processing.
The sooner errors are caught the sooner the proper adjustments can be made!
