New Bag Wells A Concern For Safeway Members

Worries and complaints have become a common reaction from UFCW 1518 members who use the new adapted bag wells at the end of checkstands. While these additions were installed with good intentions, and meant to assist Cashiers and Service Clerks with bagging environmental cloth bags, instead in many reported cases these modifications have increased the potential risk of injury to workers.

Many members have said these additions are poorly constructed; they have sharp edges that could potentially hurt not only members, but customers who attempt to bag their own groceries. Some workers are also expressing concern about the awkward postures that the new bag wells create.
