CHILDCARE FOR ALL FRONT LINE WORKERS
Spring break is over… Now what’s the plan for working parents?
Grocery, pharmacy, industrial food processors, and home care workers have been heroically braving the front lines of the COVID-19 crisis, keeping the public fed, supplying them with medicine, and taking care of the vulnerable. They didn’t sign up to be front line workers, but they have proudly risen to the challenge.
With school closures, special provisions have been granted to essential workers who are fighting COVID-19 – childcare assistance and in-school care for school-age children. Unfortunately, as it stands, grocery, pharmacy, industrial food processors, and home care workers have not been offered this much needed support to help them continue doing their jobs. Many of our members have been left with no option and will have to take time off work starting Monday morning.
Join us in asking the BC Goverment to grant grocery, pharmacy, industrial food processors, and home care workers the same childcare provisions that have been offered to essential workers. Keeping store shelves stocked is a critically important job right now – for stores to cope, they will need these employees to show up for work. Home care workers provide quality of life and essential care for their disabled and elderly clients. Without additional support, many of these workers with young children will have no choice but to join the now one million Canadians who have applied for EI.
ALL front line workers deserve recognition for their brave efforts and the work they are doing. When we flatten the curve on the COVID-19 pandemic, it will be in no small part due to their efforts.
